My Own Backyard

"My Own Backyard; Exploring the Urban Landscape through Poetry and Art" is a neighborhood art and humanities project that engages youth and older generations to create a greater sense of place through exploration and creative expression. Students explore the history, people, unique architecture, and major events of their own neighborhood and learn to express their thoughts through poetry and artistic exercises.

Originally funded through the Pennsylvania Humanities Council at a pilot site in Johnstown, PA, "My Own Backyard" has been recognized statewide and nationally as a model project in the arts and a great way to bring together the people of a neighborhood in a common focus. Culminating events can include an exhibition and poetry reading, a book of art and poems, as well as a Youth Festival. Subsequent phases of the project can also be introduced over time. "M.O.B." can be undertaken in any neighborhood setting, such as a senior center, church, after-school program, or a school. For more information, write M.O.B. author, Sandee Gertz Umbach at washarts@washarts.org.
